В 18 веке на территории будущего Новороссийска находилась турецкая крепость Суджук-Кале. В османской крепости располагался один из крупнейших невольничьих рынков на Северо-Западном Кавказе. О дате основания Новороссийска существуют разные версии. Версии более раннего основания поселения включают дату основания турецкой крепости Суджук-Кале в начале XVIII века.
В 1829 году по Адрианопольскому договору территория Цемесского залива перешла от Турции к России. Однако местное черкесское население долгое время не признавало власти российской военной администрации. 12 сентября 1838 года в Цемесскую бухту вошли корабли русской эскадры, 5816 человек под командованием Н.Н. Раевский и М.П. Лазарев приземлился на руинах турецкой крепости. Этот день теперь отмечается как дата основания города.

In the 18th century, on the territory of the future Novorossiysk there was a Turkish fortress Sudzhuk-Kale . One of the largest slave markets in the North-West Caucasus was located in the Ottoman fortress. There are different versions about the founding date of Novorossiysk. In 1829, according to the Treaty of Adrianople, the territory of Tsemes Bay passed from Turkey to Russia. In 1882, the first cement plant came into operation, in 1888 the first train came to Novorossiysk, and in 1893, next to the Novorossiysk elevator , the world's first three-phase power station went into operation . From 1896 to 1920, Novorossiysk was the centre of the Black Sea province.
