Top 5 WORLD-CLASS AIRPORTS in the Philippines // The Grandest Airport Projects in the Country
Here are the biggest and the grandest Airport Projects in the Philippines.
1. New Mactan International Airport
is the second busiest international airport in the Philippines.
It is located in Lapu-Lapu City on Mactan Island, a part of Metro Cebu and serves the Central Visayas region. The airport is managed by the Mactan–Cebu International Airport Authority and serves as a hub for Cebu Pacific, Pan Pacific Airlines, and Royal Air Charter Service.
On 797 hectares (1,970 acres), it has a single 3,300-meter (10,800 ft) runway that was built by the United States in 1956 as an emergency airport for U.S. Air Forces' Strategic Air Command bombers and was known as the Mactan Air Base. The runway is complemented by a full-length taxiway that it shares with the current Mactan Air Base of the Philippine Air Force.
2. Sangley Point International Airport
also referred to as Cavite Airport, is a domestic airport in the Philippines primarily intended to serve general aviation and turbo-propped airliners in the general vicinity of South Luzon and the Greater Manila Area.
The airport is located at Sangley Point, Cavite City in the province of Cavite. The airport site will be adjacent to the Danilo Atienza Air Base and will be served with either P2P buses or a ferry from SM Mall of Asia.
Sangley Point Airport was inaugurated on February 15, 2020 by President Rodrigo Roa Duterte. Dry run of its operations was conducted on November 2019.
It is the fourth commercial airport to serve the Greater Manila Area, complementing and helping to decongest its neighbor Ninoy Aquino International Airport.
3. New Clark International Airport
is an international airport located within the Clark Freeport Zone between Angeles and Mabalacat in the province of Pampanga, Philippines. It is located 43.2 NM (80.0 km; 49.7 mi) northwest of Manila.
It is accessible through the Subic–Clark–Tarlac Expressway.
The airport serves Central Luzon, Northern Luzon, and to an extent Metro Manila. The name is derived from the former American Clark Air Base which was the largest overseas base of the United States Air Force until it was closed in 1991 and handed over to the Government of the Philippines.
The airport serves both international and domestic flights. A new passenger terminal building is under construction and is expected to be finished in 2020.
4. New Manila International Airport
also known as Bulacan International Airport, will be an international airport located on the coastal areas of Bulakan, Bulacan, 35 kilometers north of the city of Manila. The project was proposed by the San Miguel Corporation and will help decongest Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), the main entry and exit point to Manila for air travelers. The airport is a part of flagship infrastructure program of the Duterte administration, commonly known as "Build! Build! Build!".
The proposed airport will be built on a 2,500-hectare coastal property as part of an envisioned 12,000 hectare township that features a residential zone, government center, seaport and an industrial zone.
The ₱735.634-billion airport development will cover the passenger terminal building with airside and landside facilities as well as an airport toll road and railway.
The first phase of the project, which includes two runways and the terminal buildings, will commence construction in late 2020 and is planned to open by 2026.
5. Bicol International Airport
is an under-construction international airport that will serve Legazpi, the capital city of Albay and the regional center of Bicol Region, in the Philippines. The airport will still have the IATA and ICAO code of the old Legazpi Airport, despite being located in nearby Daraga.
The airport is located in Daraga, an adjacent city of Legazpi. The ₱3.5 billion project is on a 200-hectare plateau 15 kilometers from Mayon Volcano. Some sources name the airport Southern Luzon International Airport. It will replace the old Legazpi Airport, which is only 2 to 3 kilometers from the volcano. Once opened, it will handle an estimated 2.2 million passengers every year.
