Organizational Experiences of Paid Domestic Workers

Class, race, gender, citizenship and language are only some of the key dimensions to understand domestic work and the inequalities rooted historically in this occupational field in most parts of the world. Raquel Rojas Scheffer (Free University of Berlin) has studied how different dimensions and scales of inequality impact and shape the way domestic workers organize, build networks and make claims for their rights. She’s looked particularly at Uruguay and Paraguay, two Latin American countries where the outcomes of social mobilization around the rights of domestic workers are found to differ quite significantly.
