Making Ted Kennedy’s 1969 Massachusetts Driver License Replica on my vintage IBM equipment
I was contacted by a movie production to make some props for an upcoming movie about the Chappaquiddick incident, namely a reproduction of Ted Kennedy’s driving license. Like the original, I will make it on my restored 1960s IBM punched card machine and my IBM Selectric typewriter.
This is in 1969 when Ted Kennedy drove off a bridge, tragically resulting in the drowning of a young female campaign staffer and ensuing scandal. They needed replicas of 1960's Massachusetts driving licenses and applications, which were done on punched cards. They sent me photos of original licenses that I had to recreate. That gave my IBM Selectric II and 029 Keypunch a good workout.
[edit 2018] And the movie is out (trailer here https://youtu.be/qG-c8DtOm9g ), and they did not use my props! There is a scene where they alude to his driving license, but then nothing is made of it. So the scenes ended up on the cutting floor, or were never filmed. It was a fun gig though!
