Ruger Mark I & II Magazine Compatibility & Modification - 22LR 22 Long Rifle Rimfire MK1 MK2 MK I II
Ruger Mark I and Mark II magazine compatibility. Depending on the manufacture date of your Ruger Mark I the magazines may or may not be a direct swap with the Mark II series. In 1971 the dies used for stamping the frames were replaced due to wear, when Ruger did this they updated the design by changing the side that the magazine follower button is on. Mark I pistols made after this change can use Mark II magazines.
The stamping A-100 under the left grip indicates a 1971 or later Mark-I with the updated frame, these will share a magazine with the Mark-II, without magazine modification. If your Mark I is a pre 1971 model then you can still use a Mark II magazine by moving the follwer button to the other side.
To move the follower button on a Mark II magazine you must remove the base by deptressing a recessed plunger and sliding it off. Lower the follower to the release point and pull the button, simple relocate to button to the desired side and reassemble.
The original Mark I magazine is simpler to modify to fit the Mark II. No disassembly is required, simply compress the spring far enough to release the follower button.
Other differences are the Mark II magazine has a 10 round capacity while the Mark I is 9 rounds. The Mark II has a bolt catch that holds open when the magazine is empty, which the Mark I does not do.
This video demonstrates the compatibility of the magazines as well as magazine conversion and modification.
The Mark II shown is a Stainless Steel model with a 4.75" barrel.
The Mark I shown has been parkerized and has a 6" barrel.
The Ruger Standard, Mark I, Mark II, and Mark III are semi automatic pistols chambered for 22 LR (22 Long Rifle).
