Moths aren't attracted to light

Moths evolved to use the moon as a fixed reference point for navigation? And because the moon is so far away, it stays in roughly the same position relative to a moth no matter how far the moth flies. A streetlight doesn't work that way. As a moth moves around it, the angle to the streetlight keeps changing, and the moth keeps adjusting its path trying to keep the light at a constant angle, which sends it into an endless spiral. It's not attracted to the light as some people might think. It's just using a navigation system that wasn't built for artificial light sources.

It's worth noting that a 2024 study published in Nature Communications has offered a new, alternative explanation for this phenomenon. This research, using high-resolution motion capture, suggests that insects do not steer toward the light but instead tilt their backs (their dorsal surface) toward it, a reflex meant to help them orient in space. Near an artificial light, this "dorsal light response" backfires, causing them to become trapped in endless loops around the source.
