Pigeons can read

Did you know that researchers trained pigeons to distinguish real English words from made-up ones, and they got it right about 70% of the time? Now, of course they weren't sounding out the words or anything - they just recognized the visual patterns of the letters to figure what the word is. It's the same way you might glance at a word and just know it looks right without thinking about it.
