Texas, DOJ end in-state tuition for undocumented immigrants

Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. Fair use is a use permitted by copyright statutes that might otherwise be infringing. Non-profit, educational, or personal use tips the balance in favor of fair use.

The U.S. Justice Department and Texas have settled to end a law allowing undocumented immigrants to pay in-state tuition at Texas public colleges. The DOJ sued this week, calling the two-decade-old policy unconstitutional. A federal judge quickly approved the deal, marking a win for former President Trump’s immigration agenda. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton called the law unfair to U.S. citizens. U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi agreed, citing federal rules against giving benefits to undocumented immigrants that citizens don’t receive. Previously, undocumented students qualified if they lived in Texas for years and pledged to seek legal status. The Texas Senate had already moved to revoke this benefit. The settlement officially ends a key support for undocumented students in Texas.
