NEW TRACTORS! Bobcat is Back & Solis Has Arrived

At the National Farm Machinery Show in Louisville there were two new tractor brands on display that will soon be available to North American shoppers...Bobcat and Solis. The first is being made by Daedong, parent company of Kioti, and distributed through Bobcat construction dealers, Solis is destined to be an economy line for Yanmar dealers.

Bobcat is offering 20 models of tractors from 21 to 58 engine horsepower through their dealer network. You may know that this is not the first time Bobcat has had a small tractor line. From 2008-2012 they offered the previous generation of Daedong-produced Kioti lookalike tractors. As with the current offering, they were painted Bobcat colors, essentially a Kioti painted white.

This time around, the company maintains that it is putting a lot more effort into the re-entry into the compact tractor market. They've staffed up with tractor-devoted management and support people and are starting to differentiate the options from similar Kioti models. Long term plans are to build the tractors in a Bobcat facility and further make the tractors unique to the brand.

Success in the market will largely depend on how the new products are received by dealers. Most, but not all, of the Bobcat dealers have agreed to stock and support the tractor line. There's no doubt that Bobcat dealers do an outstanding job of backing up their core products, skid loaders and mini excavators. The big unknown about the future success of the Bobcat tractor is whether dealers will wholeheartedly embrace small tractors, and aggressively pursue the new customer base that purchases the large volumes in that market.

The other new tractor in Louisville, and they're definitely not new to the world, but are to North America, is the Solis Tractor. Solis is a huge player in the small tractor market globally, but they've not broken into the market here until now. They're an Indian company that fights head-to-head with Mahindra in that market and claims to be second in the world, in terms of total numbers of tractors sold.

Yanmar owns part of the parent company of Solis, and have reached an agreement to offer their tractors as part of their line in the U.S. Yanmar has always offered a high-spec tractor but lacked economy models like most of the competition. The Solis tractor offers a more economical alternative to the Yanmar models and will have a much lower price.

The Solis tractors are only available now in the southern United States, plans are to roll them out to dealers in northern areas later this year. The 60 hp Solis at the show had a lot of nice features like a self-leveling loader and dual remotes and the $28,900 list price for 4wd with a loader was very attractive. The tractor was a little on the crude side but, for the money, it may well be a good seller for Yanmar dealers going forward.
