Hundreds of protesters took to the streets of Yerevan on Monday after Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan signed a “painful” Russian-brokered agreement with Azerbaijan to end hostilities in the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region.

The demonstrators gathered outside and inside the Armenian government building, calling for the National Assembly to convene and reject the peace deal.

"The chaos won't help us. The only solution here is to make a decision in the National Assembly [of Armenia]. And to make this decision deputies must come here in the National Assembly," said one of the protesters.

Earlier on Monday Pashinyan announced he had signed an agreement on the cessation of hostilities in Nagorno-Karabakh with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Azeri President Ilham Aliyev.

Under the terms of the deal, Azerbaijan gets control of territory it has taken in the most recent fighting, with Armenia giving up further areas in the coming month. The agreement also sees around 2,000 Russian peacekeepers deployed to the region to guard a road connecting the rest of Nagorno-Karabakh with Armenia.
