Broken Pattern Coordination for ECM & Jazz Fusion Styles for Intermediate to Advanced Players

Here is a video lesson on working with broken pattern grooves used in ECM and Jazz Fusion drumming styles. There are many great players who used or use this type of coordination including Tony Williams, Jack DeJohnette, Jon Christensen, Bob Moses, Brian Blade, Jeff Ballard and Eric Harland.
This type of playing is notable for it's lack of a constant back beat and each measure played is of a different makeup.

I demonstrate several styles including the lighter ECM style and heavier fusion styles.
I have removed my upper toms so that you can see my hands more clearly.

The drums used in the video are Gretsch Centennial from 1983.
The sizes of these drums are: 18"x14" bass 14" floor tom and a 14"x 6.5" snare.
The cymbals in this video are all 1940's- 1960's K Zildjian except for a Paiste 22" swish.

The drum heads are all calf skin.
Microphones are a AKG C24 stereo overhead and an Shure Beta 52 on the Bass drum.
