Hey, guys. My name is Reese. A year ago, strange things started happening all around me, so I decided to google myself. What I found made me hide from everyone and move out of town.

When I was 15, my father told me that we had to move to another city. Uncle Joe was having a hard time and we, as a family, had to help. I wasn’t so excited about it. I mean, our families were complete opposites, like black and white. They were all loud, obnoxious, with bigoted views and troubling relationships. Two months passed by and we were living in a cottage near them, spending every evening with “The Loudmouth” family and my cousin Electra.
I won’t lie, I was trembling from the thought of going from private school to public school. I had heard rumors and news stories about what happened there, so I was pleasantly surprised when I entered it. It wasn’t the hellhole that I expected it to be. Sure, Electra told me to not expect any help from her at all and the kids looked at me like I was an alien. By 15, I had already traveled the world and spoke 4 different languages, I was used to good manners, and every time I’d say “Thank you, ma’am,” it made them giggle. But it was also quite apparent that I piqued their curiosity. The boys jokingly started calling me “Madam” in a flirtatious manner and the girls loved listening to my stories. Yet, every time I talked, I felt this cold stare from Electra. What I didn’t know was that she had waged war with me from the start.

But it became clear one morning. We drove together to school in silence and just before we got out, she turned to me and said, “You know I’m leading the pack, right? I’m the alpha here.” I held myself together as best as I could and only answered, “ok, sure.” Even though it sounded ridiculous. That day was cheerleading squad try-outs. Now, I understood the dynamics of the whole group, I knew that she was “The Alpha” or whatnot, but I really wanted to try. As soon as I finished the routine, she said “NO.” The other girls silently nodded. “Then what’s the point of new members if you won’t even let me learn, El?” I asked and the girls all turned to her. Honestly, I smelled fear—she knew that the girls would like me to be in the squad, yet she had to hold on to power. “You can try, for two weeks. If you’re not good enough—I’m kicking you out.” I didn’t consider it a win, but she definitely considered it a loss. For a week, practice was horrible. I was sweating, she was screaming at me throughout the whole routine, but then, I think the last nail in our friendship coffin was Colin. The top player—on the team AND with the girls. After our practice, he waited for me in the
hall with a bottle of water. “She really grilled you, huh?” he laughed. She peeked through the door and saw us. For a second, I think I saw fire and lightning in her eyes.
