Sorry for mispronouncing the name of the airport. I'm always learning more about the beautiful places that surround us, and that includes the right way to pronounce them.

Welcome to Abandoned America.
Today, we will be in Arizona exploring an abandoned army airfield from the 1940’s, which also serves as a final resting place for a few World War II-era airplane wrecks.
The Gila River Memorial Airport is an abandoned airport located just southeast of Phoenix, Arizona, United States. Although the airport is now in a state of total abandonment, it’s had several uses in the past, including military use, cropdusting, and air charter operations.
The Gila River Memorial Airport was built in 1942 as Williams Auxiliary Army Airfield #5, one of several satellite locations for Williams Army Airfield. After the end of World War II, it was renamed Goodyear Air Force Auxiliary Airfield, with its original triangular configuration modified to accommodate early jet aircraft of the 1950s. During the 1960s, it passed on to civilian control as Goodyear Airport, and then later as Memorial Airfield. By the 1990s, it had become an aircraft boneyard, and it's now owned by the Gila River Indian Community.
As of the time of this video’s recording, the abandoned aircraft boneyard includes 6 abandoned 1942 DC-4s (which were known in WW-II as C-54 Skymasters), one abandoned 1957 Douglas DC-7, and one abandoned 1945 Lockheed PV-2D Harpoon.
Abandoned America is full of hidden gems like this one, and when explored safely, legally, and responsibly, it can provide us with a time capsule in which we can not only learn about the past, but also feel it, live it, and experience it firsthand.
Thank you for experiencing this adventure with me. I hope to see you on the next one!
