Obelisks of Rome by Tyler Lansford 1 18 2021

Tyler Lansford (Ph.D. Classics, University of Washington) is a senior instructor on the faculty of the Department of Classics at CU Boulder. He is the author of The Latin Inscriptions of Rome: A Walking Guide (The Johns Hopkins University Press, 2009).
In 10 BC, Augustus inaugurated the practice of embellishing the capital of the Roman Empire with obelisks plundered from Egypt. Over the ensuing three-and-a-half centuries, his successors followed suit: by the end of Antiquity, nine such monuments are attested in the city of Rome. Through the Middle Ages, war, earthquake, fire and neglect conspired to topple all but one of these proud trophies. Re-erected at papal initiative from the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries, the obelisks form a characteristic and unique component of Rome’s cultural patrimony. In this presentation, Dr. Lansford will survey the vicissitudes of Rome’s Egyptian obelisks from antiquity to the present day.
