Johann Sebastian Bach's BWV 77, "Du sollt Gott, deinen Herren, lieben" (Thou shalt thy God and master cherish) was composed in 1723. The cantata seems like a musical contemplation on the nature and essence of love both in God and in mankind. It expresses how difficult it is for us, who are both imperious and weak at the same time, to allow the desired "Samaritan’s heart".
To depict this, Bach makes highly interesting and unusual musical choices. What do they look like? In this episode of "Bach Factory", Xoán Castiñeira and Rudolf Lutz help us understand this fascinating work.
"Bach Factory" is a video series by the J.S. Bach-Stiftung St. Gallen that gives you interesting insights into Bach's cantatas – including exclusive excerpts from their live performance.
