German Army Forward Air Controllers (Panzer - Stuka Liaison)
German Army Forward Air Controllers (Panzer - Stuka Liaison)
As a continental power intent on offensive operations, Germany could not ignore the need for air support of ground operations. Though the Luftwaffe, like its counterparts, tended to focus on bombing, it was unique in its willingness to commit forces to CAS.
Some historians arguing that Forward Air Controllers were Western Allies only, and relatively late war.
This is not true. The German Army had Forward Air Controllers from the start of the war. Officially they were called
Fliegerverbindungsoffizier ("Flivo").
Although it translates as Air Force Liaison Officer, it actually means Forward Air Controller. They were small teams of 3 to 12 Luftwaffe personnel who operated with the forward ground troops of the German Army, especially Panzer spearheads during offensive operations, to coordinate direct air support at the front.
They used a special version of the Sd.Kfz. 251 armored personnel carrier,
the Sd.Kfz. 251/3 Funkpanzerwagen.
A Communications vehicle, fitted with extra radio equipment.
