This was the epoch of the 1930s and 40s - an era of "grand style" - of fur, of duchesse satin, of embellishment, of carefully selected costume jewellery. This was top to toe glamour without anything left to chance. It was an art form encapsulating not just sartorialism but a whole way of being - from lighting and smoking a cigarette, never stepping outdoors without a hat and getting into a car.
