We’re so excited that you just earned your permit certificate! We know you’re ready to get to the DPS to get your official permit so you can start driving, but first we need to make sure you have all the paperwork that the DPS requires. We're here to make sure your first trip to get your permit is the only one you have to make!

You must have your PTDE Program Guide from the Texas Department of License and Regulation on hand. This is the packet that you purchased for $20 when you first began the course.

You only need two forms from this PTDE Guide! One form is the receipt, which is just the very first page of the packet, so that you can show your proof of purchase. The second form is the Texas Residency Affidavit.

From Aceable, you need your permit certificate, also referred to as the DE-964. We emailed this to you after you passed your Level 1 permit exam! If you lost your certificate or the email we sent, you can also access your permit certificate any time from within your Aceable account, on your home screen.

We also provide you with the Classroom Instruction Log. You can find a blank copy of this log + the logs you’ll need for your driving instruction down the line in the DPS Trip Guide that we included in the permit certificate email too.

Next on the list is the Verification of Enrollment, or VOE, form. While this form is also included in the DPS Trip Guide we provided to you, most high school administration offices keep these on hand for students to request as well. You'll need an administrator from your high school to fill out this form for you, and it expires 30 days from when it was obtained.

You'll also need to bring your proof of Identity and Lawful Presence documents. One of those required items is your original Social Security Card. If you have an unexpired Texas ID, US Passport, or US Citizenship Certificate, then that’s the only additional document you need! If you do not have one of those three documents, then You'll need to bring your original birth certificate along with your social security card, PLUS one additional document from an official institution that validates your identity. This can be an official report card, Photo ID Card, Immunization Records, or Hospital-issued birth record. You can also check out the DPS brochure for other types of documents that may qualify. All documents must be original. No copies will be accepted.

The last documents you need are the two proofs of Texas Residency. For teens in Texas, your parent or guardian will prove residency on your behalf by filling out the Texas Residency Affidavit along with these documents. Some common documents that qualify are a Mortgage Statement or Lease Agreement, Utility bills, Bank Statements, Deed, Report Card, W-2, or Auto Insurance papers. For additional types of documents that can qualify, see the brochure. Both documents must show the same name and address, be dated within 30-90 days, and come from two different sources. Your parent instructor does not need to live with you; they just need to have a Texas address. If your instructor is not your parent/grandparent/legal guardian, bring the person you live with to the DPS to confirm your Texas residency.

You can also bring the Application for Driver License or Identification Card, also referred to as the DL-14A, with you to the DPS, but we recommend getting it at the DPS instead.

You’ll also need to bring the Eligible Parent Instructor you registered with the TDLR when you ordered the PTDE Packet. If you designated an eligible instructor, you’ll need to bring your parent and your designated instructor with you, along with the Designation Form from the PTDE Packet. You’ll also want to be sure you’ve got $16 with you to cover the Learner License Application fee, to be paid in the form of cash, credit, check or money order.
