We Tested an 8-Year Ceramic Coating… This Changes Everything!

At Omni Garage Tauranga, we’re always looking for the next evolution in paint protection — and this one might be it.

In this video, we put the brand new HYDR8 Ceramic Coating from DIY Detail to the test for the very first time. This is their latest innovation — an 8-year ceramic coating designed to deliver insane gloss, extreme hydrophobics, and long-term durability.

But what makes this coating different?

HYDR8 is built on a TEOS-based formulation (tetraethyl orthosilicate) — a technology designed to improve structural integrity within the coating. The goal? Reduce fracturing, resist clogging, and maintain long-term performance so your vehicle keeps that deep gloss and water-repelling behaviour for years.

Before applying the coating, we carried out a full chemical and mechanical decontamination, followed by a paint enhancement to remove light swirls and scratches. We then prepped the surface using the C6 ceramic adhesion promoter polish, ensuring the clear coat was perfectly ready to bond with the coating.

Now here’s where things get interesting…

This coating behaves very differently from traditional ceramics.
Instead of working panel-by-panel, HYDR8 allows you to apply the coating across the entire vehicle, letting it begin bonding before removal. Once the coating reaches around 50% of its haze/rain-bowing phase, it’s ready to level and remove.

This changes the game:
Less stress during application
Reduced risk of high spots
Longer working time before curing
More flexibility during install

But it’s not all upside…

We found the application to be thicker, grabbier, and slightly harder to level compared to other coatings. Buffing required more effort — so there’s definitely a trade-off between user experience vs long-term performance.

The real question is:
