Driving to the Trailhead While Wearing XC Ski Boots and Galoshes (to Save Time and Wear and Tear)
I'm pretty lazy when it comes to certain aspects of cross-country skiing. One of the ways is that I often just drive to and from the trailhead in my cross-country ski boots. That is, if I'm wearing either a set of NNN classic boots of NNN BC boots because both are soft and articulate enough to walk and drive in them safely. I don't, however, wear 3-pin or skate ski boots while driving because they're a bit too stiff to safely operate the gas/brake pedals.
In the process of wearing xc ski boots while driving or running a quick errand, though, you run the risk of wearing out their soles and the attachment point for the binding bar. That, and you can find yourself slipping in them in icy conditions or on a linoleum floor at the convenience store, for example. So I usually wear a set of galoshes to provide better grip when walking/driving, as well as to decrease the amount of damage the soles could take otherwise.
I agree that this isn't the most ingenious idea, but I never actually see any xc skiers wearing galoshes. Probably because you have to put them somewhere when you arrive at the trailhead or snow (if you were hiking to access snow, for example). However, the alternative could be a total drag (i.e. falling or wearing out the soles).
Anyway, galoshes are inexpensive, durable, and easy to slip on and off.
