Thomas Hobbes, English Civil War, and Modern Political Theory - Philosophers In The Midst of History
In this seventh installment of our quarterly series, Philosophers in the Midst of History, I discuss the life, thought, and importance of Thomas Hobbes in his historical context. Hobbes, best known for his work, Leviathan, is one of the fathers not only of modern political theory, but of modern philosophy more generally.
In this lecture, we discuss the situation of early modern Europe into which Hobbes was born, and in which he lived and worked (for over 90 years), focusing specifically on developments and conflicts in religious, intellectual, and political spheres. We pay particular attention to the situation in England, which eventually devolved into a full civil war between Royalists and Parliamentarians.
We also discuss some of the key ideas of Hobbes' political theory, including the state of nature, the reasons for human conflict, the laws of nature and the social contract, the need for sovereign authority to enforce norms, and the control over intellectual life by the sovereign.
The previous talks in the series focused upon Plato, Aristotle, Boethius, Anselm of Canterbury, Rene Descartes, and Hannah Arendt. You can watch all the talks in this ongoing series here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL4gvlOxpKKIj-iR53DSbEJf5z7behuTWt
The series has been renewed for next year, and we will be discussing Plato for the ancient period, Boethius for the medieval period, Thomas Hobbes for the early modern period, and Friedrich Nietzsche for the late modern period.
