Dušičky - The Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed, Memorial of All the Faithful Departed, Feast of the Dead, Memorial of the Departed, or popularly, Souls' Day, which falls on November 2, is a day in the Roman Catholic Church liturgical year when the Church prays for the souls in Purgatory. Liturgical rites were also celebrated at this time by the Czechoslovak Hussite Church, which emerged from the milieu of Catholic modernism after the First World War.

The Anglican Church abolished the celebration of Palm Sunday, but somewhere, the remembrance has been restored within the Anglo-Catholic movement. The Protestant Reformation was not so consistent in its abolition: Martin Luther failed to suppress the observance in Saxony during his lifetime.

History

The celebration of All Souls' Day derives from the Feast of All Saints, which falls on 1 November. On the night of 31 October to 1 November, the Celts celebrated the end of summer and the new year, the feast of Samhain. According to Celtic tradition, Samhain was a time when the souls of the deceased returned home, and their relatives used lanterns made from hollowed-out beets to help them on their journey to the underworld. People dressed in rags and painted faces to protect themselves from evil spirits. Samhain is most similar in nature and features Halloween, celebrated on the evening of October 31. The historical predecessor of the Christian Souls were ritualized celebrations or feasts held directly on necropolises to honor deceased ancestors among the pagan Slavs.

Given that the Celts and then the Slavs settled in Central Europe and their cultures intermingled, Samhain was assumed to be also celebrated in the Czech Republic.

The commemoration of the faithful dead was introduced in 998 by the Abbot of Cluny, St. Odilo († 1048), who sought to Christianise the pagan tradition. From Cluny, the celebration spread throughout the Benedictine monasteries. In Rome, the commemoration of 2 November began in the 13th century. In the 15th century in Aragon, Dominican priests began celebrating three Masses on this day; this custom was confirmed by Pope Benedict XIV (1748) and extended to all priests in Spain, Portugal, and Latin America. In 1915, Benedict XV allowed all priests to celebrate three Masses (one for the Pope, one for souls in Purgatory, one for another intention).6 At this time, processions to cemeteries were held on All Souls' Day, graves were decorated, etc.
