Summer camp 2022

After an initial lull and subsequent strong winds, calm weather returned at the end of the summer camp. The first tests with the new triangular sail showed that it seems superior to the classic square sail in strong winds. Nevertheless, the trapezoidal square sail of the ancient Egyptians also has its qualities. It also works in light winds and you can definitely sail upwind.

As the saying goes, experience makes you smart. However, if you have absolutely no experience of handling a triangular sail, it was not easy to get used to sailing first in lighter and later in stronger winds. It turned out that the predynastic triangular cross sail generates both real propulsion and height close-hauled, especially in strong winds. However, the cut is very tailored, which does not help much in weak winds due to the small sail area when sailing close-hauled.

In return, the square sail can play to its strengths in such situations. In the last part of the video we see the DILMUN S slowly fighting its way north on a 350° course in a NE wind of 65°. That's at least 75° upwind. Not a bad sailing result for a predynastic raft sailor…
