World Patient Safety Day 2021: Seeking maternal care amid COVID-19
In the Philippines, before the pandemic, over 2,000 pregnant women die due to pregnancy and childbirth complications. Those numbers may have increased especially that health services, including maternal care, are affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to movement restrictions, access to routine maternal services like mother’s classes, pre and post-natal checkups, and facility-based delivery are significantly disrupted.
Despite these challenges, health care workers supported by the Department of Health and the World Health Organization are doing their part to ensure safe and respectful childbirth. They innovate and become resourceful in providing quality care while ensuring the safety of health workers and mothers.
Here is Colline, one of the midwives in a birthing facility in Cavite province, sharing how the pandemic has changed their way of providing care to pregnant women.
