Brain Damage in the Martial Arts
If you're training in the martial arts, but don't worry about brain damage, you should! In this video, I share my experience with concussions and advice to protect your brain.

This video was inspired by Kwonkicker's story, "Why I Can't Train Martial Arts Anymore." Hope you recover soon, sir! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wM0vxwNE-z8&t=267s
In the 80's and 90's, I didn't worry about brain injuries. Back then, if I took a hard hit to the head, I was told to "Walk it off" or "Get back on the horse."
Nowadays, talk about CTE and Secondary Impact Syndrome is very common, especially in the worlds of football and MMA. While it's too late to change the past, here a few tips to help you protect your brain from needless injuries in the future...
More is not always better. The goal is to train hard enough to make a gain, but not so hard that you feel pain. Exert yourself, don't hurt yourself.
Choose your teachers and training partners wisely. No one should yell at you, blame you, or laugh at you if you get injured during training. Find people who will encourage and challenge you, not punish you.
Don't take martial arts advice from doctors and don't take medical advice from martial artists. Just because someone in your gym or dojo says, "You're okay," doesn't mean you're okay. See a doctor.
Give yourself time to heal. Injuries to your joints and muscles may never heal properly if you keep training. Injuries to your brain may just get worse! Focus on long-term success, not short-term success. Recover and heal so you can still be training in your old age.
Don't take hits if you don't have to. Taking shots to the head doesn't make you hardcore... it makes you stupid. Show your body some respect.
No matter what style you study, make protecting your head a #1 priority. Chin down, jaw shut, and at least one hand up at all times. Don't make it easy for anyone to hit, grab, or smash your head.
Remember--the greatest threat to your health and safety is YOU. Your ego and bad training habits on the mats will hurt you far more than any bad guy on the street. Protect yourself from yourself!
