United States Penitentiary - Marion, IL "1978-2005" (The ONLY Level 6 USP) - 2 Bonus Prison Shows!

The United States Penitentiary located near the small, rural town of Marion, Illinois first opened in 1963. The intended purpose was to replace the aging, run-down, and extraordinarily expensive-to-maintain prison located on Alcatraz island. This had been the Federal Prison that was charged with incarcerating the "worst of the worst."

One correctional officer (CO) described the initial USP Marion prisoners as "mostly young inmates." The example he used was "first-time bank robbers." He went on to say that the typical trouble COs had to address centered primarily on relatively minor fist fights, arguments over perceived incidents of "disrespect" between two inmates, or gambling disputes.

That all changed in 1978, when USP Marion was officially classified as a LEVEL 6 facility.

United States Penitentiary Marion was now a high-security SUPERMAX prison. Federal prisoners classified as "the worst of the worst" began streaming into the relatively low-capacity prison, and almost immediately, the violence, brutality, and occasionally even murder began.

** United States Penitentiary Marion is now a medium-security facility. **
