The Lie That Built America: The Life and Death of the Western (w/ Nick Jenkins) | Rent Free History
The Western didn’t just shape movies; it shaped how America saw itself.
In this episode, we trace the rise and fall of the Western as America’s most powerful myth: the lone hero, the empty frontier, the promise that violence plus virtue equals destiny. From early silent films and John Wayne-era iconography to revisionist Westerns, Vietnam-era disillusionment, and modern deconstructions like Unforgiven, Logan, and Brokeback Mountain, we look at why the genre once felt essential, and why it eventually collapsed under its own lies.
Along the way, we talk nostalgia cycles, American idealism, war, changing attitudes toward authority, superhero fatigue, and what it means to keep believing myths in the information age. The Western didn’t disappear. We just stopped believing it the same way.
Note: If you're wondering why I check my phone so often in the video version of the episode, the camera we were using had a limited filming time. Hence, there are multiple segments.
