Narrowboat Vlog / WHY you MUST stop at SKIPTON / Episode 27

What’s not to love about Skipton? Immense history, a rich culture, independent shops, food & drink places galore, a famous market an iconic castle, stunning countryside and, perhaps most of all, friendly, fiercely proud and passionate Yorkshire people joined this with a trip by train to SALTAIRE - Saltaire was built in 1851 by Sir Titus Salt, one of Yorkshire’s leading wool industrialists. Salt moved his 5 mills from nearby Bradford to the area to arrange his workers and build a new and large textile mill by the Leeds and LIverpool Canal. The area also had growing railway links and was ideal for transporting goods.

Along with the mills, Salt built neat stone workers houses, improving their quality of living dramatically from the growing Victorian slums of Bradford. The houses had tap water, bath-houses, a hospital as well as ensuring avenues for education through a library, reading room and gymnasium. The village also had a school for the workers’ children, and spaces for leisure, such as allotments, a billiards room, a concert hall and a park.

ENJOY - with love Mark Kim and the BOYS
