Sergei Vasilenko (1872-1956) was a Professor at the Moscow Conservatory, where his students included Aram Khachaturian, Nikolai Roslavets, Nikolai Rakov and Aarre Merikanto. His marked interest in the exotic is reflected in his musical exploration of Central Asia and in his Chinese and Hindu Suites, works marked by colourful Russian orchestration. He was influenced by the nineteenth-century nationalist school, by his teacher #Taneyev and by #Scriabin, adding an interest in Symbolism and hints of early modernism.
