Carved between 23,000 and 25,000 BC during the Gravettian period, the Venus of Brassempouy is one of the oldest realistic human faces ever discovered. Found in southwestern France and sculpted from mammoth ivory, this miniature head — only 3.6 centimeters tall — reveals remarkable symmetry and technical precision in one of the most difficult materials of the Ice Age.

Unlike most Upper Paleolithic “Venus” figurines, this piece isolates the face. The mouth is intentionally absent. The cross-hatched pattern may represent braided hair or a woven hood. Twenty-five thousand years ago, in Ice Age Europe, someone carved a face and preserved it in ivory. This is what that face may have looked like.
