Landscape Photography on The Snowdon Ranger Path, Snowdonia (Ep #059)

Autumn is often the landscape photographer's favourite season, but this late in the year it's very unusual to have such benign conditions on Snowdon. The clear blue November skies aren't necessarily the most ideal conditions for landscape photography, but the visibility and the golden hour light at both ends of the day, more than make up for that.

It's also a delight just being on the high peaks at this time of year in late Autumn, in such warm pleasant weather. Not only does the great weather makes for an enjoyable photographic outing, but also the absence of the crowds of trippers you usually find on a nice day in this part of the Snowdonia mountains - and the whole of North Wales and Anglesey for that matter!

My day starts out with a long range image of the whole Snowdonia area, taken from Gaerwen summit on Anglesey. There was quite a cloud inversion over Llanberis, but I would have no chance of being on a peak above it to get a photograph, as I would be at least 3 or 4 hours reaching the path and climbing it! So a Snowdonia cloud inversion image will just have to wait for another photo outing.

So, without hurrying, I skirt past Caernarfon and pass through the Snowdonia villages Waunfawr and Betws Garmon to park up at the Snowdon Mountain Ranger Path car park alongside Llyn Cwellyn. It's here that I find my first landscape photography composition even before starting my mountain walk on the Snowdon Ranger Path.

As I start my ascent it's still golden hour and I manage a few good handheld shots along the way. I reach the summit of Moel Cynghorion around midday and spend a couple of hours taking landscape pictures and enjoying the location.

Then it's time to descend, with more images captured along the way, culminating in a fabulous golden hour and some great light on the peaks as I return to the Snowdon Ranger Path car park.

This video discusses a number of photographic image capture techniques, such as focus stacking and exposure blending. Also long exposure photography. You can view the results of these techniques in the final images shared in this film.

Living locally on Anglesey, very close to the mountain peaks of Snowdonia and the coast of North Wales, it puts me in reach of some of the most iconic photographic locations in the Wales and possibly the UK. If you are a landscape photographer or hiker who is planning to visit Anglesey or Snowdonia, why not let me know? I'd be more than happy to help you with local knowledge and tips, based on the locations you'd like to visit, the time of year and prevailing conditions - these factors can shape a visit to the Snowdonia area quite considerably. Especially from a landscape photography point of view. Please feel free to make contact and I'll help in any way I can.

Also, if you'd like to learn more about the photographic techniques I discuss in this landscapes video, please feel free to ask. Let me know what you would like to see me cover in more detail. I'd be happy to make some additional post processing videos to demonstrate exposure blending, focus stacking and advanced post processing using Lightroom and PhotoShop.
