One Voice, Many Stories: A First Person, First Nations Oral History

Manitowoc Public Library is honored to be offering a three-part series with First Nations Oral Historian, Napos, an Oral Scholar in Residence in the UWGB Education Center for First Nations Studies. Rich in detailed personal history, Napos will share this first-person narrative with the public, focused not just on his life’s journey, but also that of his family, friends, and First Nations people in general. Filled with loss and discovery, sadness and joy, heartbreak and laughter, it’s a tale that needs to be heard—a quest to reclaim a voice and a culture that was nearly stripped away.

This week, the focus of the conversation will be life in Milwaukee: all the discoveries and struggles, the obstacles and growth. Though that's where the conversation will start, there's no telling where it will lead, as anyone that tuned into the first installment can attest!

“One Voice, Many Stories” is an incredible opportunity to acquaint yourself with an American history with which you may not be that familiar—or familiar at all. Napos—who is also known by his non-First Nations name, David Turney—is an adjunct instructor at UW-Green Bay in First Nations Studies and teaches classes in Menominee history, culture, and world view. He is a graduate of Native American Education Services College in Chicago with an emphasis in First Nations Studies. Napos is also a member of the Menominee Nation.
