"It was very impressive, I never expected it. I thought the hotel would blow up with us inside. The wind was very strong, the windows started to break and there was a lot of security and they helped us. Now we are calmer, the attention of the hotel is good, they are giving us food, we have electricity, water, all the services, but it was something very impressive, very ugly."

STORYLINE:
Survivors of the hurricane that killed at least 27 people as it devastated Acapulco searched surveyed the damage on Thursday, hoping that aid would arrive.

Hurricane Otis took many by surprise when it rapidly strengthened from a tropical storm to a powerful Category 5 hurricane as it tore along the coast.

With tens of thousands of residents in damaged homes without power, the death toll could rise.

Acapulco's municipal water system was down, and Mexico's president López Obrador, who made it to Acapulco late Wednesday with many of his top officials, said restoring power was a top priority.

Some 500,000 homes lost power.

The early images and accounts were of extensive devastation, toppled trees and power lines lying in brown floodwaters that, in some areas, extended for miles.
