Today we take a look at the band Days of the New who had a massive hit with their debut album which sold over 1.5 million copies. The band would be led by charismatic frontman Travis Meeks who was the creative force behind the band, but also had trouble getting along with his bandmates. By 1999 the original lineup had dissolved with Meeks now heading the band. The band's original lineup would reunite in 2014 for a summer tour and planned EP, but things fell apart quickly.

Now to say that Days of the New's history was tumultuous would be an understatement. The band's origins date back to the mid 90's during the emergence of what some would call the post-grunge era. They would form in 1995 in Indiana as the band was originally an experimental rock and groove metal trio who originally called themselves Dead Reckoning with vocalist Travis Meeks, guitarist Todd Whitener, drummer Matt Taul. basist Jesse Vest and the band would soon change their sound to more acoustic instruments and the band also underwent a name change around this time to Days of the New. Now frontman Travis Meeks vocal style is often compared to Alice in Chains frontman Layne Staley and the Doors Jim Morrison and the band would soon end up being signed to Producer Scott Litt new label after seeing the band live. Now Litt was best known for working with Nirvana and REM. Now the following year in 1997 the band released their self titled debut album or Yellow which spawned three huge singles including touch, peel and stand, the downtown and shelf in the room. The album would go on to sell 1.5 million copies. Now keep in the mind these guys were barely out of high school or even barely adults when they got their first taste of success. And while there was a lot to celebrate the band deal with a lot of internal problems early in their career. And following the release of their debut record, MTV was starting to report that following a rcancelled show in Florida, the band members appeared physically injured with some members sporting black eyes and bruises after an apparent band brawl. And following the incident the band also got a strange opening slot opening touring with both Metallica and Alice in Chains guitarist Jerry Cantrell. Now given that the band's sound was drastically different from Metallica, frontman Travis Meeks would criticize the billing, instead claiming the band should have instead been touring with Dave Matthews. Now prior to the band hitting the road with Metallica in the summer of 98, Meeks again lashed out against his bandmates claiming they were holding him back and claimed he would be firing them from the group. Meeks had also been reportedly diagnosed with Aspergers syndrome around this time and label executives would scramble to deny his claims claiming Meeks likes to run his mouth, but in fact Days of the news original lineup would fall apart and towards the end of the year in 1998 the band cancelled their December shows that were scheduled with Finger Eleven and rumors started to circulate that the tour was cancelled because of bands infighting and because Travis Meeks was possibly ill. And by early 1999 it was officially announced that Days of the New was officially broken up. And Todd Whitener,Matt Taul and Jesse Vest would go on to form the band C14 before renaming themselves Tantric. And Meeks would hold onto the name Days of the New and form a new band under the moniker. So what exactly happened to cause the breakup still really isn't really clear. Meeks contends that his bandmates left over being jealous of him because he wrote most of their songs and collected a majority of their publishing money, while some believe Meeks simply fired them. And following the dissolution of Days of the New, Meeks simply turned his attention to the band's sophomore record titled Days of the New 2 or the Green Album as some may refer to it as. While the band's debut album was known for being fairly stripped down and acoustic, the band's sophomore record was much more bombastic, featuring a choir, orchesteral arrangements, female vocals and even electronic percussion and a young female singer named Nicole Scherzinger paused her studies at Wright State University to sing backing vocals for the album Green. And Meeks claimed he wanted the fema
