Now the replacements were one of those bands that never quite got their due until years after the original lineup fell apart. While the band would go on to become pioneers in the alternative rock movement and influence countless bands who followed. Some of their lack of excess was by their own doing.. Today we are going to explore the tragic history of the replacements. The Replacements humble beginnings really started in the city of mineapolis in 1978 at brothers Bob and Tommy Stinson's house at 2215 Bryant Avenue. Bob was the older brother and wanted to keep his sibling Tommy out of trouble so he got him started on the bass guitar. The Stinson brothers didn't grow up in an ideal home as their mother was an alcholic while their father wasn't really in the picture. And older brother Bob struggled early on in his life, in really what was foreshadowing for his later years as he was pulled out of school in the 9th grade for as he put it for being encourageable and self destructive. And he would spend a fair bit of time in the juvenille group home system and sadly that same system that was supposed to help Bob only made his self destructive behaviors worse. While also introducing him to the guitar as he would admit to Spin magazine. As a matter of fact the last group home I was at is where I learned to drink and get good drugs ad play guitar all at the same time. And eventually Bob would land back home with his drummer. Soon after Tommy picked up the bass guitar, the brothers crossed paths with drummer Chris Mars and formed a band under the monicker dog breath. It was during that time the trio jammed on covers of Kiss, Ted Nugent and the progressive rock band Yes and the band members just needd a singer to round up their lineup. They would audition several singers including one who simply read words off a sheet of paper and it just so happened that future singer and guitar player Paul Westerberg would frequently walk by the Stinson's house and hear the trio jamming on his way to and from work when he was employed as a janitor at a local politician's office and one year later Westerberg was now fronting dog breath and playing rhythm guitar. And the band would undergo a few name changes before landing on the Replacements. And at one point they were called the impediments and using that name they played a disastrous drunken show in 1980 without bassist Tommy Stinson at a church hall. The owner was so incensed with the band that he threatened to have the group banned from every major venue in the city and the band featuring that they might have a short lived career changed their name to the Replacements. But that disorderly behavior would just continue under a new name. And while the band was thought to have been led by primary song writer Paul Westerberg, guitarist Bob Stinson was equally important. Stinson would channel his 1950's era influences with his love of classic rock and the blues with sloppy drunk guitar playing that won him high praise for his playing style. And while the Replacements are often fondly remembered for their music, they were often known for their chaotic and booze fueled live shows.. No member seemed to have a bigger penchant than guitarist Bob Stinson and soon enough that hard partying lifestyle would catch up to the band leading to increased tensions. Now the band's first release would be 1981's Ma Sorry Forgot to Take Out the Trash, which showed the band having more of a punk rock sound than what we'd see in the band's later years. And the album failed to make much of a mark as did the band's follow year's EP they released titled Stink. It wouldn't be until 1983's Hootenanny that people started to see the band's full potential and they soon started to develop a cult following. Following the release of Hootenanny over 200 radio stations started to playing the Replacements. Hootenanny would serve as the band's first foray into experimenting with new sounds and it also showed the greater influence of Westerberg on the band's musical direction. As the band's reach began to grow outside of Minneapolis the band toured across the east coast eventually ending up at new york's famous CBGB's club. It was also during that tour to support the album that the group even opened some dates for R.E.M. however the tour was a failure and by the end of the leg the band almost broke up.It was finally b
