SODA (Demo Tape 1992)

I stumbled upon this tape on Ebay while trying to serch for Pearl Jam and Nirvana bootlegs. How do they relate? Who knows, BUT, as I have a love for various kinds of sodas, and the demo tape in question was labelled as a rock demo tape simply titled "SODA", I just had to buy it out of curiosity. I got it in the mail just yesterday, and I thought I'd share it with you, as well as what I think of each track. The tape only has four songs on it, all four of which are on both sides of the tape (don't worry I only converted Side A to MP3. Why do both if it's just the exact same tracklist?).
I haven't called this Tony Selig guy yet, but I plan to so as to learn more about the artist/band, the songs, when this tape was recorded, and where.......

Soda artist/band members are currently unknown, but the singer sounds strikingly similar to Cam Clarke (the voice of Leonardo from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 80's, as well as Snoopy from the Worlds Of Wonder Snoopy series).

01. Purple Heart.
No, it's not a ripoff of Jimi Hendrix's "Purple Haze"! The songs sounds very reminiscient to a Bryan Adams song to me. And just when you think it's over, the artist/band goes NOPE, and keeps the song going. NICE! Also, the closing guitar solo sounds very much like something that Gary Rossington (from Lynyrd Skynyrd) would've played back in Skynyrd's heyday. Hits close to home for me. Very 70's-poprock inspired from the sound of it, very good choice for an opening track.

02. Bottom Endless
I keep wanting to call it "Bottomless Endless". Probably because of Nirvana's "Something In The Way"/"Endless Nameless". Great drum intro and chord progression! This song has more of a Foo Fighters feel to it with its speed and vocal arrangements. Very cool track that definitely deserves some head-banging, especially if you're trying to play it on guitar or bass (which I probably will some other time).

03. Let You Let Me
THIS is probably my favorite track on the tape. Has a very different sound that particularly reminds me of the Swinging Steaks' "Circlin'", as well as Nirvana's "About A Girl", "Rape Me", "Pennyroyal Tea", and "All Apologies". The way it starts off soft and gets loud soon after the first two lyrics, as well as the unique vocal arrangements, this song could really ROCK!!!!!!!

04. Into The Teens
A very 60's-inspired sounding track. Makes you think of the "Summer Of Love" "Woodstock Festival" kind of stuff. Very Beatles-esque in chord and vocal arrangements.

All in all, I rate this tape as a 8 out of 10.
The four songs on here are all good, some great, but there could've been more than just four songs on both sides of the tape. They could've done four songs on one side and four OTHER songs on the other side.
Also with the singer, he created (I believe) some great vocal arrangements for these songs, but his voice doesn't seem to fit in with the rest of the musicians' sound very well. Like I said, he sounds like Cam Clarke. He kind of takes away from the rock, and kind of gives it more of a kid-friendly/family-friendly vibe, which is okay but not necessarily what the band needs. Now if they got someone who sounds like, say, Scott Weiland or Dave Grohl or someone to sing these, the sounds of their voices would've fit in a lot better with the rest of the sounds. The singer we get here is NOT AT ALL bad by any means, but with all due respect he doesn't seem to fit in with the rest of the sounds.
Long story short, for what it is, it's a VERY enjoyable tape, and I'm glad that my curiosity drove me into buying it on ebay.
HOWEVER, I still want to learn more about the history behind this artist/band, and this tape. Like, who or what IS Soda? Who IS Tony Selig? Why is this music not available anywhere else? If anyone can help me, other than the phone number on the tape (which I WILL call sometime soon), please be sure to let me know.......

10/10/2021 LONG OVERDUE UPDATE:
Thank you so very much to Riverboat Films for posting this in the comments, letting me know more insight on the Soda band. Here's what he/she said:
"MEMBERS:

Alan Weatherhead
HISTORY: Soda was formed by lifelong friends John Atomn Daniels, Michael de Vogel, Charles Jordan (nee Herlitz), and Alan Weatherhead.
John and Michael have played in the band "Wobble Test", Charles in "Nerve twins", and Alan in "Lost Toothbrushes". (Los Toothbrushes is making a rare appearance on 2/29 http://linnemans.com/events/2020-02/)
The name Soda was gifted to them by Mark Cherek, "anywhere else it's pop!" Soda played around Milwaukee, Chicago, Iowa City, St. Louis, Austin, and other towns. Members of Soda moved on to bands such as Maki, Knit Delicate and Koester. They all played and wrote on Charles Jordan's last Knit Delicate album.

Special thanks also to Paul Drewry, who directed me to more of Soda's music on his own YouTube channel!
