New Life For An Old John Deere And A Little Hay To Haul
My cousin Christopher bought the old '39 John Deere from me about 18 months ago. In the meantime he's taken it down to bare metal, primered and dressed the ol' boy in some brand new clothes. He's sporting new rubber all the way around along with new rims. The head was sent to a machine shop and came back better than new. A new exhaust manifold and smoke pipe was on the agenda for the sprucing up the cool, well worn but deserving John Deere received. Today is the day he's put back into the field for the first time in many decades. The original owner, Uncle Woody himself, did little more with the old tractor for most of its life except plowing his own as well as his neighbors gardens in his small community just off the beaten path. The original magneto is still hot as a firecracker and lights off the fuel mixture with relative ease which is a testament to the hard work Christopher put into the machine himself. You have to admit that the TLC given by the old man that bought it new so many decades ago has contributed to the good condition of the internal working of the engine and transmission....
These young men are living the dream of owning and now working a good part of the original farm that was owned by their grandfather....my own Uncle John. This field today was originally an orchard and it was a bit of a treat to help him and the older generation of cousins put up hay working around all the darn fruit trees !! I never cut, raked or baled it but I guarantee there was more than a little cussing from time to time. I guess even before their grandfather owned it, the property was owned and farmed by their Great-grandfather Henry, but he probably passed before these boys were born...you know how the memory of specific dates fade a bit with time.
No matter, these boys were having the time of their life putting up the first cutting of hay off this property in a good long time. And to Christopher the icing on the cake was finally putting to use all the hard work he's put in on the 84 year old John Deere. There's a lot more to the story, but its good enough as it is and just know the whole crew all the way down to the youngest cousin Ollie had a great fun time for the afternoon !! #johndeere, #caseIH, #hay
