The Expanse season 5 will give us a deep dive look into Amos Burton’s history. Amos is the Rocinante’s mechanic, he's an Earther who doesn't talk about his past – but knows a lot about brothels and Baltimore. He's eerily comfortable, and even cheerful, at the prospect of violence. He’s complicated, enigmatic, not chatty at all so when he does say something it grabs your attention, and he doesn’t shy away from physical confrontations - especially in protecting people he cares about. He’s a survivor who’s fiercely loyal. He’s a good mechanic, a problem solver, and if things go down he’s good with his hands and with a weapon.

In the fifth season of the Expanse we know Amos (Wes Chatham) returns to Earth to confront his past and the legacy of the life he fought to leave behind. Over the past four seasons we’ve gotten a lot of details about Amos’ past, but they’ve come in bits and pieces. The fifth book in the Expanse series “Nemesis Games” provided the first revealing look at the character as he got his first POV chapters. We’ve learned that Amos had a rough upbringing, and that he’s very protective of children for that reason. He’s said he grew up in “places” like brothels, and this hints that he may have been exploited.

Amos is a fan favorite Expanse character, and part of his appeal is that he is somewhat mysterious. It’s clear he has trouble connecting with people emotionally. He lacks emotional intelligence or social graces. He shows signs of what some fans think of as sociopathic tendencies, or signs of not being neurotypical. This video argues that his diagnosis is not important, but what’s really interesting is his ongoing struggle to do the right thing. Amos doubts his ability to make good decisions, so he looks to characters like Naomi Nagata (Dominique Tipper), James Holden (Steven Strait), or Prax to guide him.
