So with fresh eyes and a year’s experience I want to share with you my journey to Berlin. In this mini series I’ll share the renowned apartment search, working both on a contract and on as a freelancer in Berlin and making friends in a new location. So the episodes:

So this is episode 2 - Finding A Place To LIVE In Berlin in the mini-series - Everything You Need To Know About Moving To Berlin.

Now in this video we’ll run through how to find somewhere to live in Berlin. It is notoriously difficult but in this video we’ll go through:

I’ll explain the system and some tips on how you can increase your chances of finding somewhere to live in Berlin and at the end of the video I’ll also share with you a tip which may help if you’re really stuck with the Anmeldung. Plus I'll for through a brief history on why it’s just a bit difficult to rent in Berlin these days and how it's history has kind of defined the current situation.

As of 2020:

- Rents have risen in Berlin, quite sharply but it used to be historically low
- In 2003 Berlin's rents were less than half of what they are now, hardly anyone spent more than a quarter of their income on rent
- Berlin's rents are rising faster than anywhere else in the world: from 2017 to 2018 alone, rents rose by 21%

So I’ll run through why this happening today in a city like Berlin where rents have been historically lower than most western capital cities. Why opposition to gentrification in Berlin is leading to protests. An insight into the companies who are buying up all of the Berlin property, a bit about criminal networks exploiting the rental system (!) and loads about finding a place to live in Berlin.
