BADA BAGH Jaisalmer History [In Hindi] - The Royal Rajasthani Cenotaph | Vyas Chhatri | Sunset Point

This video is based on my visit to Bada Bagh, Jaisalmer. We hired a guide in Jaisalmer who accompanied us to this place as well and told us about the History of Bada Bagh in Hindi. A lot of movies have been shot in and around Bada Bagh. 'Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam' movie shooting also took place at Bada Bagh.

Bada Bagh, also known as Barabagh is a garden complex situated at about 6 km from Jaisalmer Fort in the Indian state of Rajasthan. Overlooking a mango grove with around 140 mango trees in it, it consists of a set of royal chhatri cenotaphs which were built by the Maharajas/Maharavals of the Jaisalmer State in the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries CE. These chhatris are also known as Vyas Chhatri.

A descendant of Maharawal Jaisal Singh, better known as the founder of Jaisalmer State, Jai Singh II (1688–1743), commissioned a dam which was used to create a water tank during his reign in the early 18th century. This act of his made the desert green in this area.

After the death of Jai Singh II on 21 September 1743, his son Lunkaran made a beautiful garden by the lake and a memorial chhatri cenotaph on a hill overlooking the lake. Later on, a lot of other cenotaphs were built here for Lunkaran and other Bhattis. The last chhatri, which was made for Maharawal Jawahir Singh, dates from the 20th century and remains unfinished after Indian independence.

Bada Bagh is located on a small hill. The royal memorial chhatri cenotaphs have been carved out of sandstone blocks and have been made in 4 different sizes - for the ruling kings, their queens, their princes, and other royal family members. Each cenotaph has a marble slab with inscriptions about the deceased royal and a symbolic image of a man on a horse.
