Bloody Mary’s HORRIFIC Burning Of Bishops Latimer and Ridley At The Stake
The burning at the stake of Bishops Latimer and Ridley has gone down in English History as one of its most brutal days. Ordered to be burned in Oxford during the reign of Mary I or Bloody Mary, the Oxford Martyrs as they would be known were sentenced due to refusing to accept Catholicism.
The English Reformation is known to have been a time where religious intolerance and instability hit England following Henry VIII's break from Rome. The reigns of the Tudor monarchs following Henry VIII would find themselves having to deal with key issues revolving around religion, Catholicism and Protestantism. Edward VI following Henry would continue the Protestant Revolution, but Mary I or Bloody Mary would restore Catholicism.
If you disagreed with the return to Catholicism, you could very easily be labelled a Heretic, and that is the fate that greeted Bishop Nicholas Ridley and Hugh Latimer. They were both high ranking members of the Church, becoming Bishops but they would meet their end being burned publicly at the stake.
This is the story of the horrific burning of Bishop Latimer and Ridley.
