The HORRIFIC Execution Of Richard Roose - The Tudor Cook Who Was Boiled To Death!

The Tudor times are known as a period of great suffering and cruelty for some at the hands of torture and execution. The Tudor monarchs are famous for their brutality and their legacy is one which is associated with death and horror. The most famous English King has to be Henry VIII, and his reputation is carried by his poor love life, however he was an extremely barbaric and brutal king. Today we look at one such man who suffered greatly at the hands of the King, Richard Roose.

Roose was accused of attempting to poison a number of Bishop John Fisher's household, and was found guilty of this after 2 members died and also over 15 were taken ill. Roose was a chef who worked in Fisher's kitchens, and he would admit his acts after being horrifically tortured at the Tower of London on the notorious rack. Henry VIII would compound his guilt by sentencing him to death but by a method of execution that had hardly been seen in England. Roose being a cook was sentenced to be boiled alive.

There must have been some element of mockery in the punishment, as Roose was a cook and he was to be boiled to death. However the plot to allegedly poison John Fisher is a rather interesting mystery, and some historians even blame Henry VIII himself or the Boleyn family for trying to kill the influential Catholic Bishop and Scholar.
