The Impossible Farm - Putting Animals to Work
In which we sell our goats to buy an electric fence and put a flock of chickens to work. Also Esther has some feelings and Nick has an ingenious way to pull out t-posts.
We're still doing fall-season work, preparing soil for crops next spring, but this one is all about moving things around and making room. Not everything about our homestead set up is changing in order to make the Impossible Farm...but sometimes it feels like it.
In this one we tried to give some words to why that is, and why it's worth it.
Thanks for coming along! We are super grateful for your patience with us and the sense of community you share as we struggle to build a life that matters. We appreciate you!!!

SEND NICK A TEE SHIRT: Hey, everybody, we thought of a way that you can do a nice thing for us and also maybe have some fun! If you've followed us for long you know that Nick loves funny, unique, and interesting t-shirts. You may also have noticed he hasn't had a new one in a long time. You can fix that! Send him a t-shirt at our PO box address (listed below) and maybe he'll wear it for a video. The size is XL. He likes...Star Wars, juggling, basketball, 80's comedy, truly vintage things, independent thinking, self-reliance, and good, smart slogans. No politics, please. We don't mind at all if you're advertising your farm or YouTube channel or something like that, but keep in mind that Nick will only wear your t-shirt in a video if he actually likes it!
Thanks for supporting us and have fun!!!

About the Fouch Family:
We are Nick and Esther, and our three kids Milo, Stella, and Sadie. We have lived off the grid -- in the sense of not connected to the power grid -- for four years on three acres of wooded land in Southwestern Idaho. Nick is a finish carpenter working on building his own business. Esther is a writer, the author of a recent memoir called "What Falls From the Sky," and a daughter of the homesteading teacher and activist Carla Emery, who wrote "The Encyclopedia of Country Living." Nick and Esther were both raised in Idaho, near where we live now, but we've also lived in Massachusetts, Utah, and California. Our kids are ages 9, 8 and 4.

More about putting animals to work:
In this episode we put chickens to work leveling and tilling a flat area that will be garden next season. But that's only one of a whole connected set of things. FIRST we sold our goats to make space as well as available attention and financial resources. THEN we used that money to buy an electric poultry fence, which we'll keep set up as we move the hen house closer to the Little House for winter and move a greenhouse to where the hen house was. ** Does just reading this make you tired? Because writing it makes ME tired.** THEN Nick took down the goat yard fence because he's about to drop some huge trees right across it, which will become lumber for his workshop and open up Arcadia for us to plant trees in there in the spring. And then the kids were kind of cute. :)
Feel free to add your suggestions or ask questions about LIVESTOCK or having to change your plans as you learn. Happy gardening and homesteading to everyone!
And finally, if you can only read ONE BOOK about ANIMALS ON THE HOMESTEAD (and you're more towards the beginner end of things) here's Esther's pick. http://amzn.to/2xckTRx
Enjoy!
