HORRIBLE HOT MOP SHOWER FAILURE!

This shower was leaking in a few different areas but the main problem was a leak in the hot mop shower pan. Hot mop or hot tar waterproofing is a method used in California to waterproof showers for tile. Hot mop is different than methods like Schluter Kerdi or Redgard. With Schluter Kerdi or Redgard the waterproofing is directly under the tile, whereas with hot mop or a vinyl pan liner the waterproofing is under a mud bed. Also, the shower niche was leaking because it lacked proper waterproofing. Besides that, the shower head was not installed correctly, so a slow drip caused massive damage to the 2x4's in the wall.
This shower will need to be completely removed and redone.

But this video illustrates the fact that any waterproofing method can fail if it is done the wrong way. Use a trusted source for waterproofing, or learn how to do it properly yourself!
