In today's photography news, Tony Northrup tells you about planned changes to Apple's iMessage to support RCS (Rich Communication Services) that will finally enable Android smartphones to be more than lowly greentext. The implications go far beyond messaging, however. With the end of greentexting, those of us who are serious about smartphone photography will be free to swtich to more powerful Android smartphones, such as the Sony Xperia, Google Pixel, and Samsung Ultra lineups.

Sony announced upcoming firmware updates for the a1, a7S III, and a9 III... and they're not what I hoped. They're pretty disappointing. Still, I'll explain what the hell "Relay Playback" means to you.

Of course, we have to talk about global shutters. Rumor has it Nikon's working on a low-megapixel, ultra high-speed version of the Nikon Z9, possibly called the Z9H. It should be a sports camera for the 2024 Olympics, taking on the Sony a9 III and the future Canon R1.

Canon also leaked some lenses, including a 400mm f/4 DO IS.
