ABOUT THIS VIDEO:
The rich ethio-jazz register electrified nights in Addis Ababa at the turning point of the 60s and 70s. A mix of Afro-American influences, local traditions and, above all, fabulous Amharic songs, this music contributed to the emancipation of Ethiopia. It is a cultural current that received restored courtesy of the French producer Francis Falceto, via the unmissable Ethiopiques collection. With the singer Mahmoud Ahmed, the saxophonist Gétatchèw Mèkurya and the vibraphonist Mulatu Astatke counted among his contemporaries, Hailu Mergia is a towering musician who synthesized this staggering repertoire. On stage at the Moods Club in Zurich, the keyboardist and accordionist rolls out a complete set that includes a funky overture that might equally appeal to fans of Booker T., one of the pillars of Stax music. The influence of reggae is more subtle, but ultimately logical once you know of the rasta's fascination for Haïlé Sélassié. It is especially evident halfway through, with an intractable off-beat that Augustus "Far East Sound" Pablo would have been proud of. The passages played on the chromatic accordion reveal the complexity of the local musical structures on arrangements that are as delicate as they are heady. Fans will recognise the master's two recent works, including the beautiful Lala Belu, a record signed to Awesome Tapes From Africa.
