ALCO RS-2s in MU (Multiple Unit) configuration

Railroads found that it cost 30% less to move freight with Diesel Electric Locomotives than with steam. One reason for this was the ability of diesel engines to allow one cab crew to control multiple engines. Even the early Road Switchers could be ordered with MU capability to pull longer trains. Yes there was a cab crew in diesel locomotives. Even though there was no need to shovel coal or manage boiler pressure the fireman requirement did not star being phased out until 1972. It was formally recognized as finished in 1985.
