The queen’s royal guard.

The queens life guard. The names given to a variety of high performing soldiers from Great Britain. England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. The best of the best when it comes to protecting the official royal residences within London. Many know that they are the most notorious tourist attraction when visiting the capital. These men are incredibly credible. The majority of the guardsman are still in active duty within the British Army, which means they should never be messed with. It is notorious on how strict being in the army is which is reciprocated when being a guard. This is why being a guard can be so challenging. Now of course these guards are human, and no matter how much you are trained. No one is perfect. Being a guard. You have to stand in one position for a long time. Granted they are allowed to walk up and down a bit whilst on the job. Now imagine being a guardsman whilst feeling faint. It is so uncomfortable; I could not comprehend how it feels whilst being a guard. When a guardsman is ever feeling light headed and are about to faint. They have to follow a strict set of instructions. This is best known as “fainting to attention”. They must go down on one knee then fall face first, this is seen as the most professional way of fainting. Harsh right?

Now if you have ever watched a queen’s royal guard faint on camera you would notice that they do stumble forwards and land face first. The demands needed to stay standing for long periods of time in the sweltering heat must be unbelievable. Look at the uniform they have to wear

The most infamous item of the uniform has to be the helmet they wear, adopted from the French army following the defeat of Napoleons French imperial guards at the battle of Waterloo, the French wore these to appear taller and more intimidating. Believe it or not, that’s made out of real Canadian bear skins and has a whopping height of 18 inches and a weight of 1.5lbs.

It seems to be an often occurrence on guardsman fainting during hot days. So, what are they told to do to battle the light headedness? hydrate as much as you can before shift, eat your breaky and wiggle your toes to keep the blood flow around the body. Plus, it doesn’t show! The problem with fainting is not enough blood flow around the body, especially the brain. Being a guard and having to stand still must be torture at time, add that and a blistering hot day, its bound for disaster. Take these videos for example, all during ceremony’s where they are told to stand in the same position for ages. Locking their legs and not being able to move the body doesn’t get sufficient blood around the body, there’s only so much the body can handle until something gives way.

In an article posted by the express it states “faint with dignity and if your bladder can’t take the strain of four hours standing to attention, think of England and don’t leave your post. The troops who will line the route of the royal procession and escort the royal couple, many of them Foot Guards who will be wearing sweltering scarlet coats and bearskin hats, have been given orders that they must “faint to attention” if the heat proves too much for them. True grit is displayed by those soldiers who can topple forward face first while still holding their bayonet-tipped rifles.
