India police volunteer convicted of rape, murder of trainee doctor in Kolkata

An Indian police volunteer was convicted on Saturday of the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at a hospital in the eastern city of Kolkata, in the speedy trial for a crime that sparked national outrage over a lack of safety for women.
 
"Sanjay Roy (accused) has been declared guilty by the court, and he will get the harshest of punishments, and in future, all those (people) who are associated with this incident will be exposed," said the father of the rape and murder victim, whose name was not provided to protect identity under Indian law.
 
There was heavy security outside the court where more than 200 armed police were deployed before the defendant was brought to the court in a case that has led to mass protests and strikes throughout India.
 
Judge Anirban Das said circumstantial evidence had proved the charges against Roy and that the sentence, to be announced on Monday, would range from life in prison to the death penalty.
