Soil Test 101

Our soil is a complex system full of minerals, organic matter, living organisms, gas and water. So it is important to have a general idea of what the soil is made up of, and some of the foundational aspects of what helps the soil become and remain “healthy.” Like many of you, I desire to have a green healthy lawn, but in order to do that, we must first have a balanced, healthy soil.

The soil test will tell us a few things like; macro nutrients: NPK, Ca, mag, sulfur. It will also show us depending on the test, micro nutrients: Iron, boron, chlorine to name a few. We also will find out our soil pH & CEC (cation exchange capacity) etc.

In a nutshell, it will help guide you with what products you may need to put down, or refrain from putting down.

Your soil pH doesn’t have to be confusing. The pH scale is from 1 (acidic) to 14 (alkaline or basic) where right in the middle at 7 is neutral. The sweet spot for most lawns is a pH of 6.2-7. Depending on what your lawns pH is, will guide you if you need to put down products to correct this. For more information, let me know in the comments if you'd like to see a video on this!

So by gathering all of this information, you will:
1. Understand what your soil needs.
2. Avoid putting down un-needed products.
3. Save money by using fertilizers specific to ONLY what your lawn needs.

If you find this information helpful, comment and let me know.
